A healthy diet is essential for children’s growth and development but diet also plays a big part in oral health.
We all know tooth decay is a bad thing. But what actually causes it? What happens is the billions of bacteria in our mouth actually eat the food we eat. When these bacteria come in contact with sugar, they eat it and produce acids to dissolve and damage the teeth. Not only that, but acidity from the food and beverage itself also known to weaken tooth enamel.
You need to know what to look out for; soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, fruit based juices and drinks, sugary candies. These are highly acidic and full of sugar. Your enamel is the line of defense against acids, and every time you eat sugar filled junk food, you’re essentially inviting cavities and sensitivity into your mouth. Most people know high sugar foods and drinks are unhealthy, but are completely unaware of its impact on their teeth. So when we talk about high sugar foods being junk food, we mean it!
Teach your kids at an early age that these foods and drinks are to be avoided. So what should your child and you be eating? For beverages water is the best thirst quencher of all, and fluoride and tap water actually makes your tooth enamel stronger. Choose nutritious low sugar foods and snacks full of vitamins and minerals. And of course, brush and floss your teeth every day.
